A five-month-old British baby has died after a car ploughed into a group of holidaymakers in southern Lanzarote, according to local media.

The baby’s parents and grandparents were among those injured in the crash, which happened close to the Aquavala water park in Playa Blanca, said Canarian Weekly.

Reports say a car, driven by a 23-year-old British woman, collided with a second vehicle before mounting the pavement, hitting a group of tourists.

Two women were also seriously injured and four others were hurt in the incident, which happened on Monday afternoon.

Police are investigating and the local Mayor Oscar Noda, pictured above, declared two days of mourning on Tuesday. All public events have been suspended until Thursday and a minute’s silence will be held today at noon in Yaiza’s Town Hall square.

In a Facebook post on Monday, the Mayor said: “The Yaiza City Council expresses its solidarity with the victims and their families of the multiple accident that took place this afternoon in Playa Blanca.”

He added that the incident had ‘shocked the whole island’.
