Vaccines Minister Nadhim Zahawi has given a strong indication the Government is starting to understand the dire situation of the travel industry, saying the sector needs to ‘get back on its feet’.

On the same day as thousands took part in the UK-wide Travel Day of Action, Mr Zahawi led a Downing Street COVID update, in which he urged people to get both vaccines ‘so we can get our lives back’.

The Minister said 60% of all adults now have protection from both jabs and that vaccines are the way out of the current restrictions.

He said the Government is looking at ‘operationalising’ a vaccine passport certification, via either an app or ‘a letter that you receive demonstrating that you’ve been vaccinated’.

“We will continue to work with other countries and the Travel Taskforce to see how we can build on all this really good progress in the vaccination programme so that we can have the use of the double vaccination with testing to open up more of our economy,” he said.

“We are looking at all of that to see how we can open up our economy and make sure that we work with other countries to facilitate travel globally because we need to get the travel industry back on its feet.”
