Travel agents are being asked to share their photos, thoughts and tips on finding the ‘authentic’ Spain – with cash prizes up for grabs for the best entries.

It’s part of the Spanish Tourist Office’s #SlowTravelSpain social media campaign, which aims to raise awareness of what the destination has to offer away from its better-known, much-visited resorts and attractions.

The tourist board wants agents to share photos, videos, tips or anecdotes on Facebook and/or Twitter using the hashtag #SlowTravelSpain to help encourage people visiting the UK’s favourite destination to get out and about, explore the country, meet locals and experience traditional food and activities.

One lucky agent will win a cash prize of £100 for their #SlowTravelSpain post, with two others winning £50 each. The STO will also be liking and sharing the most compelling posts.

Slow travel includes taking part in low-impact activities, exploring quieter routes, lesser travelled paths and travelling with seasonality in mind, resulting in a much more authentic experience of the country.

Examples of #SlowTravelSpain posts that Spain lovers have already shared include people taking time out from busy schedules; sharing tips and destination ideas for visiting Spain off-the-beaten-track; posting images of undiscovered beaches; travelling by train; sharing a must-do experience or posting an image of a regional dish that wouldn’t be found in the busy resorts.

The STO said: “The #SlowTravelSpain campaign will highlight sustainable forms of travel in Spain and its islands, recognising the importance of forming a connection with local people and cultures when travelling whilst also lessening harmful impact on communities and the environment.

“The campaign will focus on geographical diversification and aim to showcase low-impact activities and journeys that fit within the slow travel theme.”

A spokesperson for the STO added: “Spain has become much more sustainable and this campaign is all about showcasing the lesser-travelled Spain.

“Lots of agents have been to Spain and have booked trips for their clients. We want to see their images, read their words and thoughts about their authentic experience and where they’ve been.”
