Universal Studios is planning its first UK theme park and has bought a site in Bedford.

A spokesperson for Universal Destinations & Experiences confirmed to Sky News that the company has ‘acquired land’ and is ‘at the early stages of exploring its feasibility for a potential park and resort at this site’.

“It will be many months before we are ready to make a decision to proceed and we look forward to engaging with all relevant stakeholders and the local community,” the spokesperson added.

The Bedford site, in Kempston Hardwick, is a 15-minute drive from the town centre. It will be the first Universal Studios theme park in Europe.

More than half of the UK population live within two hours of the location, which is 45 minutes from London and accessible from Luton airport, Sky added.

The Bedford Independent said ‘excitement is building’ in the area and the park could open by 2030.

A spokesperson told the Bedford Independent: “We recently acquired land in Bedford [Borough] and are at the early stages of exploring its feasibility for a potential park and resort at this site.

“It will be many months before we are ready to make a decision to proceed and we look forward to engaging with all relevant stakeholders and the local community.”
