A couple who claimed their Caribbean holiday was ruined after they saw a dead body at their hotel have been offered a £200 gift voucher and professional counselling by TUI.

The company admitted to Travel Gossip that it ‘did not meet its usually high standards’ during Alan and Sarah Stevens’ £2,800 17-day all-inclusive holiday, but it said this was largely due to factors outside its control.

The couple were staying at the Riu Republica Hotel in the Dominican Republic when they saw the covered body of a 35-year-old man who had reportedly fallen from the fourth-floor balcony, according to the BBC.

They also complained that other holidaymakers were having sex in the pool and there was ‘constant cannabis smoking’.

Mr Stevens, aged 50, told the BBC it was a party hotel, but this wasn’t how it had been described by TUI.

When he complained to TUI, it offered to move him to another hotel, but he said he declined because he’d ‘heard from other guests that it was just as bad’.

Mr Stevens, who told the BBC he had been a loyal customer of TUI’s for 25 years, has also rejected its offer of a gift voucher and professional counselling.

In a statement, TUI said: “We are sorry to hear about the experiences our customers had at the RUI Republica.

“At TUI we aim to give our customers an exceptional experience and it seems on this occasion that this did not happen.

“We are working with our hotel partner RUI to investigate the claims and will be speaking directly to customers impacted.

“Once again we would like to apologise to these customers and thank them for their patience.”
