Tourists in Sydney have been warned to stay out of the water after a British diving instructor became the city’s first fatal shark attack victim for 60 years.

Simon Nellist died from ‘catastrophic’ injuries after being attacked by a Great White off Little Bay Beach, just south of Bondi.

Several beaches along the coast, including Bondi and Bronte, will remain closed until Friday with swimmers told to stay out of the water.

Drones were deployed in an attempt to track down the shark, while lifesavers on jet skis patrolled the area.

While describing the incident as a tragedy, tragic, authorities in Australia said shark attacks are rare.
