On the Beach expects Sunday to be its busiest trading day since March 2019 after seeing a bookings surge following the easing of travel restrictions.

The online travel agent says bookings are almost 160% up week-on-week.

And with the second Sunday in January traditionally the busiest day for On the Beach, it says it is expecting this Sunday to be the best for almost three years.

The company stopped selling summer holidays last May due to travel restrictions, only putting them back on sale in August.

It says 44% of its current bookings are for travel in April, May and June, with the Canary Islands the most popular winter destination.

Rhodes and Crete are the most popular for the summer, it says.

Four and five-star hotels are most in demand, it added.

The OTA is offering free airport lounge and fast-track to encourage bookings for this summer.

Chief Customer Officer Zoe Harris said: We’re thrilled to see the excitement surrounding summer holidays this week following the easing of travel restrictions – it’s been a very difficult couple of years for travel, so to see consumer confidence returning is incredibly encouraging.”

From 4am today, travellers returning to the UK no longer need to take a pre-departure COVID test and from Sunday they’ll be able to take a lateral flow Day 2 test instead of a more expensive PCR.
