Sub-zero temperatures have led to the cancellation of flights across the US ahead of the busiest weekend of the year.

Almost two-thirds of the country has been put under a winter weather alert for a ‘bomb cyclone’ and more than 5,000 flights have been cancelled or delayed in the run up to Christmas.

American Airlines, United and JetBlue are among airlines that have waived flight-change fees.

The ‘snowpocalypse’ is set to sweep across 30 states from Washington to as far south as Florida.

Temperatures could hit as low as -50 degrees centigrade.

People have been warned plunging temperatures could lead to frostbite on bare skin within minutes.
