Thailand has cut the time Brits can remain in the country without a visa back to pre-pandemic levels.

Tourists now need to apply for a visa if they intend to stay for more than 30 days.

Until 31 March, Brits could remain in Thailand under the visa exemption scheme for an extended period of 45 days, which was introduced last October to encourage tourists to return post-COVID.

In update to its travel advice for Thailand, the Foreign Office warns that tourists who overstay their visas could be fined 500 baht (about £11) a day up to a maximum of £500. It adds: “You also risk being held in detention, deported at your own expense, and banned from re-entering Thailand for up to 10 years.

“The enforcement of penalties for overstaying is strict, and conditions in detention centres can be harsh.”
