British Airways’ flights to Saint Lucia were grounded yesterday as the island locked down while waiting for the biggest storm so far this season to pass.

Both of Saint Lucia’s airports were closed from 10.30am on Thursday, causing BA to postpone a direct flight from London Gatwick and an onward service from Georgetown.

The Gatwick flight was rescheduled to leave at 11.35 today.

Ahead of the storm, which was expected to hit St Lucia last night, the country’s Prime Minister Philip Pierre told residents in a social media post: “Protect your lives, property and livelihoods.”

Mr Pierre also called for people to remain calm .

The Foreign Office (FCDO) said the islands’ two airports closed at 10.30am local time (3.30pm BST) until further notice.Businesses and government offices closed from 1pm. Schools closed all day.
