A two-week lockdown has begun in Slovakia, while other countries in the region are planning new measures to slow the spread of COVID.

All but essential shops and services have closed and gatherings of more than six people have been banned.

Slovakia’s lockdown began days after its neighbour, Austria, began a lockdown on Monday that will last for at least 10 days.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Czech Republic has declared a 30-day state of emergency, although it is currently unclear what restrictions will be put in place.

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed calls for more restrictions, while Netherlands Health Minister Huge de Jonge said it is planning ‘heavy measures’.

The Netherlands is expected to announce details of the new restrictions tomorrow (Friday 26 November).
