Saga’s Spirit of Adventure has been forced to abandon a cruise mid-way to the Caribbean due to a COVID outbreak onboard.

The ship, which left Southampton on 22 February for a 35-day cruise, had stopped at the Azores and was due to visit Antigua, Anguilla, Tortola, Port Royal, Grand Turk and Bermuda.

But Spirit had only visited the Azores before it was forced to turn back.

A Saga spokesperson said a ‘limited number of guests’ had COVID, adding that they were either asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms.

Saga said all passengers will be given a full refund.

The spokesperson told the BBC that strict COVID-19 entry rules in the Caribbean meant Saga had made the ‘difficult decision’ to return to the UK.

The spokesperson added: “The safety of our guests and crew is our number one priority and we value the long-term relationship we have with them.

“We, like everyone else in the cruise industry, are learning to live with COVID.”
