Long-haul travellers flying via Qatar have been reminded that they aren’t allowed to leave Doha airport during the early part of the World Cup unless they have a Hayya card, which is a form of fan ID.

Only those with match tickets can apply for a Hayya card, which allows them to bring another three people with them into Qatar.

It appears from an article in The Independent that some travellers are unaware that Qatar is the first host nation to ban regular tourists during the World Cup, although the rules for entry are explained in the Foreign Office travel advice for the emirate.

The advice, last updated on 17 November, now says that passengers without match tickets will be allowed to apply for an Hayya card from 2 December, when there is expected to be a mass exodus of fans, media and officials at the end of the World Cup group stage.

Until then, transit passengers without tickets will have to remain in Doha airport.
