A couple who left their baby at an airport check-in after being told they’d need to buy a separate ticket for the child have been arrested.

The two parents were detained by police after leaving their baby at the check-in at Ben-Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, where they were checking in to a Ryanair flight to Belgium.

Israeli news outlet KAN said both adults had tickets for the flight to Brussels but did not have a separate ticket for their child. When they were told they’d need to buy one, they got into an argument with staff and walked off.

After staff noticed they’d left the baby, they called police.

The manager of the Ryanair desk said everyone was in shock and told the Jerusalem Post: “We’ve never seen anything like this. We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.”

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “These passengers travelling from Tel Aviv to Brussels (31 January) presented at check-in without a booking for their infant. They then proceeded to security leaving the infant behind at check-in.

“The check-in agent at Ben Gurion Airport contacted Airport Security, who retrieved these passengers, and this is now a matter for local police.”
