The arrivals area at Palma airport was partially evacuated yesterday after a fire broke out.

It occurred in the engine of one of the moving walkways, according to Majorca Daily Bulletin.

Passengers were forced by the Guardia Civil to leave the area due to a large volume of smoke.

Initial reports suggest one of the rubber belts driving the walkway had caught fire.

The fire service used giant ventilators to clear the smoke, said the English language publication.

The area was closed for around three hours, reopening at 3.30pm yesterday.
