Olympic sailing gold medallist Shirley Robertson OBE has been named Godmother of Ambassador Cruise Line’s second ship, Ambition.

Shirley will officially name Ambition at a ceremony in Newcastle on 11 May and will join the new ship’s first cruise, which departs the city on 12 May, for one night, before disembarking in her hometown of Dundee.

After that, Ambition will continue on its inaugural 14-night Hidden Gems of France and Spain sailing.

Shirley became the first British woman to win gold medals at two consecutive Olympic Games, in Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.

She was named World Sailor of the Year by the International Sailing Federation in 2000, she has been a trailblazer for women in sailing for many years.

However, she admitted she hesitated when first approached by Ambassador with the request that she become Ambition’s Godmother. Shirley, who lives in the Isle of Wight, said she’d seen cruise ships ‘getting bigger and bigger’ and added: “Big cruise ships aren’t me and I wasn’t sure I wanted to be Godmother.”

But she said she was convinced once she saw the Ambassador brand that it was right for her. “I am thrilled,” she added.

“To arrive somewhere by sea never gets old, and this is a great product, I am looking forward to being on the ship and particularly proud of it,” she added.

Ambition will carry up to 1,200 passengers in 714 cabins, 125 of which have balconies and 113 of which are suites.

Following the ship’s maiden voyage from Newcastle, Ambition will sail from an additional six regional UK ports in its inaugural year including London Tilbury, Dundee, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol, and Falmouth.

Ambassador CEO Christian Verhounig said: “Not only is she passionate about all things nautical, but Shirley’s story is an inspiration to us all.

“What’s more, with the launch of our second ship we are also announcing cruise departures from seven regional UK ports, including Shirley’s hometown of Dundee.”
