Maleth Aero has been chartered to operate a summer programme of direct flights between the UK and Cuba, as flagged by the country’s Ministry of Tourism last month.

The non-stop services, from Gatwick and Manchester, will be the only direct flights to the Caribbean island from the UK since TUI’s flights to Cuba will cease at the end of this month.

The flights are being chartered by Iron Travel, an operator with its main office in Spain, and Euro Airlines will handle the ticketing.

An inaugural flight will depart from Gatwick to Cayo Coco on 5 May carrying up to 25 members of the UK travel trade on a fam trip organised by the Cuban Tourist Office.

Passenger flights will then launch from Manchester on 10 May, operating to Holguin every Friday, and a Gatwick flight will operate to Cayo Coco every Sunday from 12 May.

Maleth, a Maltese carrier, is using an A330-200 for the weekly flights, offering both economy and business-class seating.

Iron Travel Commercial Manager William Ruano said he is hopeful UK tour operators will take seats on the flights, which are also available to book via GDSs.
