The person tipped to become Britain’s next Prime Minister has waded into the debate over the future of Doncaster Sheffield Airport, saying it should remain open.

Liz Truss has called on airport owner Peel Group to think again.

In a letter to Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher, she said: “I fully believe there is a viable future for this airport – and hope that the owners will examine all options throughout the review underway to find a sustainable path forward.

“I would implore the Peel Group to work closely with all those affected to find a solution that works for everyone – including yourself, other Members of Parliament, local businesses, and local leaders.

“Those who will be affected are best placed to identify a strong and credible aviation future for the airport.”

Peel Group has extended the review into the airport’s future for another three weeks, but Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones said the extension was ‘not long enough’.

“We need it extending much further so we can get every option looked at to ensure that we keep this as a flying airport,” he said.

The petition calling for DSA to remain open is close to hitting 100,000 signatures.
