Kuoni has lost another store with the closure of its Bristol city centre branch.

One of the original three stores alongside Bluewater and Milton Keynes, the Penn Street shop was closed as part of a strategic business review as part of the company’s re-organisation.

A Kuoni spokesperson told Travel Gossip: “We have made a decision to close our city centre Bristol store as part of our ongoing retail evolution.

“We have a thriving store nearby at Cribbs Causeway within John Lewis, and had seen that footfall had fallen and we always monitor how shopping trends are changing.   Two staff members remain with the business, now working within our virtual call centre.”

Kuoni’s other Bristol store will be taking over customer relations, while the store manager at Penn Street was already due to leave the business, the spokesperson added.

“This is part of a review looking at where we have got duplication and has been planned for a while as we had the opportunity to come out of the lease,” they said.

“We always keep an eye on how shopping trends are changing and make sure that we’ve always got stores in the right locations.”

Kuoni says the closure is not part of a wider plan of store closures, pointing out the opening of a new store in Aberdeen and the relocation of its Liverpool store to a bigger space.

The closure of the Bristol store follows a number of others in recent years including Lakeside, Bromley, Leeds, Windsor, Kingston, Stratford, Canterbury and Glasgow, which were closed in 2020.

Kuoni’s former UK Chief Executive Derek Jones tweeted: “Sorry to see this one close its doors for the last time. Bristol was one of the original three stores alongside Bluewater and Milton Keynes.

“Home to some amazing staff over the years and scene of a famous heroic rescue (by me) of a staff member locked in the toilet!”

Fans of the store took to Twitter to pay homage to the Kuoni branch, with tweets including: “We booked our very first Kuoni holiday in this store! Fabulous, friendly team”, and “The bestest memories ever in that store.”
