Britons travelling to Rio de Janeiro and the surrounding areas to celebrate carnival have been urged to remain vigilant after a shooting last night.
At least one person has died and up to six people have been injured in the incident that took place in Praia do Maua, around 65 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro.
According to reports, police have not made any arrests.
In a travel update, the Foreign Office said: “There were reports of a shooting taking place around midnight of Sunday 19 February during carnival celebrations in Praia do Maua.
“You should remain vigilant if you are in the area and call local police if you require assistance.”
The carnival in Rio de Janeiro runs until Saturday 25 February.
