The Foreign Office has issued another warning about the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka, which has led to shortages of fuel and food.

Supplies are running low because of a lack of hard currency to pay for imports.

A report on the BBC said there are now mile-long queues at petrol stations in the capital, but no international imports are expected for two weeks.

The Foreign Office lifted its advice against non-essential travel to Sri Lanka two weeks ago, but in an update yesterday it said: “There is a major shortage of fuel (diesel and petrol) affecting transport and businesses, and there are daily power cuts due to electricity rationing.

“This has led to protests and violent unrest. Further protests, demonstrations, roadblocks and violent unrest could occur at short notice.”
