British tourists in the Bolivian capital city La Paz were urged to stay in their accommodation yesterday as the military took over the central square.

An armoured vehicle also rammed through the entrance of the presidential palace in what has been described by the President Luis Arce as a failed coup attempt.

In an update to its travel advice, the Foreign Office said: “There have been reports of heightened military activity by a faction of the Bolivian Armed Forces in La Paz.

“If in La Paz, you should stay in your accommodation or remain in a safe place. Avoid the Plaza Murillo in La Paz [pictured above] and surrounding areas.

“The security situation could change quickly without warning. Remain alert to developments and pay attention to instructions from local authorities if in any other part of Bolivia.”

British nationals in Bolivia who need assistance can call the Foreign Office in London 24-7 on +44 (0)20 7008 5000.

The military leader General Juan Jose Zuniga has since been arrested.
