A passenger flight was delayed reaching its gate due to an unusual trespasser on the runway.

Air New Zealand flight NZ675 had just landed at Dunedin Airport when it came to a sudden halt, according to online publication Stuff.

The captain told passengers: “I’m sorry I’m going to have to make an announcement that I’ve never made before.

“There is a hedgehog on the runway.”

Firefighters were called to remove the hedgehog and the plane was later able to taxi to the terminal.

An Air New Zealand spokesperson confirmed flight NZ675 had a small delay of five minutes ‘while the aircraft waited for a hedgehog to be removed’.

“The hedgehog made if off the runway safely,” it added.
