A female guest was left soaked in blood after being caught in a shower of broken glass aboard Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas.

Fellow passengers looked on in horror as a shattered balcony partition door crashed down onto the ship’s busy Boardwalk neighbourhood, with one eyewitness saying the woman suffered multiple cuts and had coin-sized shards embedded in her flesh.

Luckily, the victim escaped serious injury and was able to walk to get medical attention.

The shocking incident – which occurred on Saturday last week as the ship returned to Port Canaveral, Florida at the end of a seven-night Western Caribbean sailing – happened as crowds were gathering to watch an NFL game in the popular Playmakers sports bar on Deck 6.

One design feature of Royal’s Oasis-class ships is the internal ‘balcony’ cabins overlooking the large central boulevard area. Somehow, the glass door on a Deck 10 balcony broke and the pieces rained down on to the main boulevard beneath.

One eyewitness, speaking exclusively to Travel Gossip, explained how crew rushed to the site after a PA announcement using Royal’s ‘Alpha Alpha Alpha’ codeword, which signifies a medical emergency.

“I was there but didn’t directly see it – I turned around when I heard the glass break,” he said. “The glass had somehow shattered into small pieces before falling. She had pieces the size of quarters in her.

“The woman didn’t want to go to the medical bay at first but she was bleeding so was talked into it. It was nothing life threatening but she had significant-sized pieces of glass in her arms and neck.”

Wonder of the Seas, which entered service in March 2022, is world’s largest cruise ship and Royal Caribbean’s flagship vessel. It is unclear what caused the failure of the balcony class, although passengers on cruise forums have speculated either a manufacturing fault or construction error.

Royal Caribbean did not explain how the glass fractured, and in a brief statement described it as ‘an isolated incident’, and said the cruise had continued as planned.

“The partition door on the balcony of a stateroom on board Wonder of the Seas unexpectedly fractured. The areas were immediately cleaned and the onboard medical team treated one guest for minor injuries,” it said.
