An easyJet passenger has been sent to prison after grabbing a flight attendant by the throat.

Colin Smith, 51, who has previous convictions, including one for battery, admitted being drunk on an aircraft and beating by assault.

Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, heard Smith grabbed attendant Carley Griffith when she stopped him going to the toilet as the flight, from Manchester to Malta, was about to land and the seat-belt sign was on.

The crane operator from Hull grabbed her round the neck with both hands and, as she tried to push him off, he fell on a fellow passenger.

He had to be restrained by two other passengers.

The Manchester Evening News reports he was arrested two weeks later when he returned to the UK on a Jet2 flight.

After landing at Manchester, he told police he’d bought two bottles of Famous Grouse whisky at the airport and had drunk most of one.

The court heard his fear of flying contributed to his drinking.

He was jailed for six months.
