Cyclone warnings were issued for Mauritius and Reunion as Tropical Cyclone Belal made its way towards the Indian Ocean islands yesterday.

The cyclone was expected to pass very close to the south-western coast of Reunion this afternoon, before weakening into a severe tropical storm.

Meteo France La Reunion upgraded its cyclone warning to violet earlier today, and people on the French island were urged to stay indoors until tomorrow.

The Mauritius Meteorological Service issued a class three (out of four) cyclone warning, saying Belal posed a ‘direct threat’ to the island. Heavy rain and strong winds expected, especially in the south of the island.

Tourists in Mauritius are advised to stay away from the sea, beaches, rivers and mountainsides and to take care on the roads.
