The boss of Fusion Holidays says people think he is ‘nuts’ to open a second shop while he battles ongoing health issues.

Director Harry Lightfoot told Travel Gossip strong bookings encouraged him to expand in the south of England and ‘push’ the cruise specialist forward.

On 1 June, Harry will open a Fusion Holidays store at Stansted Park Garden Centre near Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, following a £15,000 overhaul.

The new shop is a four-mile drive from Harry’s house, while the existing store is a 30 miles away which can take him up to three hours if traffic is bad.

Harry said: “Opening a second shop is a very positive move for us, but it’s a little bit different and some people, including my wife, think I am nuts. My mobility is reducing, so driving is a pain.

“I was told to reduce my stress levels because of a few medical things but then a few days later – de dah!”

But he added: “We’ve had challenges like everyone else. I think the second store will do well.”

Harry will be based at the new Fusion Holidays shop alongside a new team member, who is yet to be announced.

Harry said the new recruit has ‘great industry experience’ gained from before the pandemic and added that he was ‘considering’ hiring another travel sales consultant to join the team.

However, he added: “I do not want to open the second shop with a pool of new staff costing the business money when we do not know how it is going to be perform.”

But Harry said the garden centre was an ‘ideal’ location for another shop because of the footfall. “It has got a big carpark for 400 vehicles and they’re building another carpark for 400 cars,” Harry added.

On recent sales, Harry added: “Fusion has started strongly this year. We had our best ever January and February in terms of sales since we opened 10 years ago.

“We are on track for our best-ever March.”

Harry said he has had several ‘encouraging’ conversations with suppliers about marketing campaigns.
