Research from ABTA has revealed that 27% of Brits would consider booking a last-minute summer holidays if they can get a good deal.

And as many as 19% said they’d book just to escape from the poor UK weather.

The just-released research was carried out online by YouGov on 27 and 28 June, with a sample of just over 2,000 of the UK’s 67 million adults.

It revealed that Scots are the keenest to book a holiday somewhere hot, with 31% saying they might do so if they can get a deal and 27% saying they might book to escape the rain.

The publication of the research follows the release of Met Office figures that show the UK has just had its wettest spring since 1986.

So what’s the likelihood of bad weather continuing long enough to encourage last-minute bookings?

The Met Office long range forecast is, predictably, quite vague, but from next weekend more thunderstorms and showers are expected, with some dry, bright weather. Into August, spells of dry weather ‘will likely alternate with wetter, cloudier conditions at times’, it said.

“Through the period as a whole, warmer than average conditions are more probable, perhaps with some short-lived hot spells,” it added.
