Cape Town in South Africa has been crowned the best value long-haul holiday destination for UK travellers.

Post Office Travel Money’s latest Long Haul Holiday Report says a drop in costs locally and the weakening of the South African rand have resulted in prices for Brits falling 12% since autumn 2023.

In fact, a surge in sterling’s value again most currencies means UK holidaymakers can expect to pay less than a year ago in more than half of the 32 resorts and cities surveyed.

The Post Office report analyses the prices of different ‘staples’ such as a cup of coffee, glass of wine or three-course meal. Prices have dropped in eight out of the top 10 destinations.

Generally, the Far East looks better value for money than the Caribbean, taking three of the five best value places. However, Jamaica, does make the top 10, and Barbados recorded the biggest fall in prices, down 18.5%.

It’s the first time since 2018 that Cape Town as come out as the best value in the report. Tokyo is second on the list, while Hoi An, in Vietnam, which was number one last year, is at number three. Bali in Indonesia has kept its place as fourth in the best value table, while Mombasa in Kenya is fifth.

The remainder of the top 10 is made up of Delhi, India; Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt – which recorded the second biggest fall in prices, down 16.4% – Colombo, Sri Lanka; Santiago, Chile and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Sydney, Australia is the most expensive on the list, with tourist staples costing nearly three times more for UK visitors than in Cape Town. Costa Rica and New York, which are 31st and 32nd on the list, are almost as expensive as Sydney.

Head of Travel Money at Post Office Laura Plunkett said: “Holidaymakers could save themselves a lot of money and make a big difference to the overall cost of their winter sun trip by doing some basic holiday homework before booking to find out where meals, drinks and other staples are going to cost the least.”
