In a further blow to the UK ski industry, Austria is expected to become the latest country to effectively ban British holidaymakers.

According to local media reports, the country is plannning to impose a mandatory quarantine for all arrivals from the UK from Christmas Eve.

Ministers are understood to be meeting at 1.30pm today (12.30 UK time) to discuss placing the UK on its list of ‘virus variant areas’ on Friday.

Arrivals from other countries, including Norway, Denmark and the Netherlands are also expected to be quarantined.

If the measure is introduced, arrivals from the UK would be required to self-isolate for up to 10 days in Austria, effectively ruling out holidays over the Christmas period.

Some reports suggest arrivals could be allowed to test-to-release on day five of their self-isolation and end their quarantine early if they receive a negative result.

The news is as yet unconfirmed, but British skiers already in Austria say their tour operators and hotels have been given the heads up that the government is planning to introduce the mandatory quarantine, which has also been reported in the national media.

A TUI spokesperson said: “We’re aware of local media reports that Austria may restrict all arrivals from the UK in the coming days. We are seeking clarification from the appropriate authorities. If Austria does impose further restrictions, we will contact affected customers directly, and in departure date order.”

Currently, Austria restricts entry to those who are fully vaccinated or have recently recovered from COVID. If not boosted, they must also provide a negative COVID test.

France announced a ban on all UK arrivals, other than French nationals and those with a ‘compelling reason’ to travel earlier this month, forcing the cancellation of thousands of holidays – including ski trips – over the holiday period.

However, Switzerland also announced a mandatory 10-day quarantine for UK arrivals but later reversed its decision.
